The Engadine – a paradise for dogs too
Wide valleys, cool forests, clear streams: the Upper Engadine is a wonderful destination for holidays with a dog. The many hiking trails, the fresh mountain air and the dog-friendly infrastructure make the stay a pleasure for two- and four-legged guests alike. Bever, with its quiet character and the directly adjoining Val Bever, is an ideal base for it.

Dog-friendly hikes
The shady Val Bever right behind the village is perfect for walks with the dog: cool, water-rich and without traffic. The paths around Lake Staz and through the Staz forest also offer plenty of shade and places for the dog to swim. On the valley floor there are numerous flat routes that are pleasant even on hot days, for example along the Inn towards La Punt and Zuoz. So there is a suitable tour for every weather and every level of fitness.

Important: the national park
Dogs are generally not allowed in the Swiss National Park – not even on a lead. Those who want to visit the national park plan it without a dog or switch to the Engadine’s numerous other nature areas, where dogs are welcome. In general: keep your dog on a lead in wildlife protection zones and during the breeding season, and be considerate of wildlife. A brief enquiry on site or at the tourist offices helps you choose the right routes.
By train and mountain railway
Dogs may travel on the Rhaetian Railway and many mountain railways, usually with a discounted ticket. This makes high-alpine excursions with your four-legged friend possible too – for example up to Muottas Muragl. Don’t forget water bowls, shade and breaks on the mountain, and be considerate of other passengers when the gondolas are full.
With a dog in winter
Winter has its charm too: snow-covered winter walking trails and quiet strolls along the valley delight dog and owner alike. Watch out for road salt on the paws, the shorter days and cold temperatures. Dogs are generally not allowed on cross-country trails – but there are enough winter walking trails as an alternative.
Staying with a dog
A holiday apartment is often the best choice for dog owners: no hotel stress, your own retreat and the chance to pop out early and late without fuss. At Chesa Michel up to three dogs are welcome – CHF 10 per dog and night, simply add them during online check-in. After a hike, wet paws dry in your own apartment, and the Val Bever is just a few steps from the house. View dog-friendly apartments
